I’m considering buying an existing business in 12-18 months and would like to know what I should be doing now to prepare for that.

I am about to put my house on the market, I’m not on the verge of foreclosure or anything it’s just more house than I need. I have about ,000 worth of equity in it. Should I hold off on selling my house? Will I need the equity to qualify for a small business loan? If I sell it, a large portion of the equity will go to the real estate agent – and I do not want to mess with "for sale by owner."

I’m considering buying a liquor store and/or a tax business. Sounds like an odd combination but I work for H&R Block and know a lot about running a tax office. The liquor store is just something I’ve always wanted to do and seems to be recession-proof.

Does anyone know what I can do now to prepare myself for buying either of these businesses?

My father and I were discussing today’s economy, and we had just recently bought a house and my father said one of the reasons that we were able to get the house (people who try to buy a house in todays economy know what I mean) was that both of my parents are teachers, a so called "recession proof job" because obviously, people need to learn. So, I was just wondering, what other jobs besides teachers are "recession proof"?

North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas. All of them have unemployment lower than the national average, while liberal states like California have higher unemployment than the national average. And all of the states i have listed (Besides California) have economies still booming, such as Texas never had a housing bubble.

You really think North Dakota has social programs? People can’t afford to be poor there or you die.

I am not happy with my current job. I feel like I am stuck in a future-less job. I am considering going to school to be a Catastrophe Insurance Adjuster. Is this a career path that is recession proof?

Hi ppl,

Day by day unemployment is rising in North America.
What do you think what are recession proof jobs in the market?
What are sectors which will be least affected?

Some of them that I could think of are Doctors, Lawyers, health care and legal sectors.

The one which are surely affected are retail, finance, manufacturing etc.
Any white collar jobs?

My question is if you live in one of those cities how have anyway been spared by the economy downfall or if you have not been would you mind sharing your story? Also, what is your fear about the economy in the future. I just really wanted to get a feel of how people who have been spared by the lay-offs and the recession look at things, when right now so many in the country are without jobs. Thank you.

I am a freshman in college right now, but not happy about the state of the economy.

I know the nursing and education are recession-proof jobs, but my strengths lie in economics and english and more analytical fields; I don’t like children.

Someone in business and finance asked "how do I make money online". I gave him an answer on how I do it, and I was reported. I tried to appeal it and they rejected my appeal (twice) and took 20 points from my account. I feel that it was top contributors who reported me because everytime I post anything in Business and Finance, it gets reported. I think that some of the Top Contributors automatically assume that it’s impossible to make money online. They think everything is a scam. I think people should be more careful when reporting answers in this section.
You tell me, was this answer solicitation, and HOW?

my answer:
"Start an online community, a mini myspace in other words or forum. I have a few dating sites and I use adwords to get members. The site is free and I only have about 800 members so far on my main site, but once I have more (about 5,000 or more), I will place ads on there and make money from the ads just like myspace does. There’s free software out there for social sites so after you install it, you just work on getting members to sign up. I use Google adwords to advertise mainly. My main site is an asian site so its cheaper for me to advertise since I only only show ads to people out of Asian countries. This is cheaper for advertising, but it also means I’ll make less once I place ads on there, because clicks from people in Asia don’t pay as well since they don’t buy as much online as Americans, Canadians etc. As far as selling domains, that’s not easy. I used to do it but it’s just getting harder now with the economy the way it is. But most of the people I sold domains to were other domain investors. Advertising is recession proof though. There is always people who are looking to advertise their businesses, even when the economy is bad. Another thing you can do is buy misspelled domains or domains you think you can park. I park domains and some have been pretty successful. There’s this one celebrity that just became real famous (realized I can’t say his name for certain reasons), and right around the time this was happening, I bought about 4 domain names that are misspellings of his name. Now people searching for his name on the internet who misspell it, end up at my parked page, where I have ads that some of them click on."
notice how I said "There’s free software out there". They got me so nervous just to mention any company other than Google in this section. I took extra precaution and was still reported.

I have a potential offer on the table.

Pros:
–Unusually good salary
–In the industry I want to be in
–I know I can be successful in this position
–The manager and coworkers are supposed to be very nice and easy to work with
–This is in a recession-proof industry
–The economy is not very good and I don’t know when the next offer might come.

CONS:
–Very stuffy "corporate" type of environment. I don’t believe I’ll be happy working there, as I am more of a creative person and would like to work in a stimulating environment.
–I’d be commuting out to an office park that’s in the middle of a forest! I’d be much happier working downtown so that I can go out after work.

I am scared to turn down the position, but I feel I won’t be happy in such a stifling corporate environment. I’m more suited to freelance creative work. However, the salary is amazing! And with the economy the way it is…

What should I do?
Maybe my "cons" seem silly…but I’m just one of those people who gets extremely depressed at the sight of an office park. I am an extremely hard worker but I’m sort of a free spirit and it’s hard for me to work in a rigid environment as I’ve always worked more freelance and creative-type jobs (dotcom startups, etc.) However, the security of having a good salary is very appealing.
